Psycho Educational Assessments

The fall is one of the busiest times for psycho-educational assessments. Parents remember some of the shortcomings of their children, and schools are starting a new year, with a fresh budget.

What is a psycho-educational assessment? This is a comprehensive assessment that looks at cognitive ability and academic achievement, as well as social behaviours. Parents or schools start looking into this when a student is significantly falling behind in school, or is not behaving as expected. The logistics of an assessment is a meeting with the parents, to learn about development and background information, ideally also information from the school/teacher. Then the cognitive and academic portion is assessed one-on-one with the student & Psychologist, which can take 4–6 hours depending on ability level. The behavioural section is questionnaires and interviews with the parents, teachers and with older students.

What is the result? The end result is a 10-15 page document that highlights the strengths and areas of need of the student and can give diagnosis. Some the diagnosis include Specific Learning Disorder in Reading, Mathematics, or Writing; Intellectual disability; ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, or Conduct Disorder.
