The Happiness Myth

Let’s talk about three common myths about happiness, as explained by Dr. Russ Harris:
1. Happiness is the natural state.
MYTH: In reality, the natural state is constant change, just like the weather or the seasons change, we change too. Emotions come and go, and that’s completely normal.
2. Happiness means feeling good all the time.
MYTH: Good feelings last only a short while, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t experiencing happiness. Real happiness comes from living a rich, full, and meaningful life—one that includes the full range of human emotions. Ask anyone with kids!
3. If you’re not happy, something is wrong with you.
MYTH: Feeling unhappy is a normal part of being human. Life is challenging, and struggling at times doesn’t mean you’re broken, it means you’re alive.
The bottom line: Emotions are always shifting, and both “good” and “bad” feelings are part of a meaningful life. You don’t need to feel good all the time to be living well.
